How Much Does It Cost to Live In Gdynia?

Gdynia is a port city in northern Poland and together with nearby Gdańsk and Sopot – these three cities are often referred to as Tricity.

There is certainly a unique appeal in Gdynia’s style of life: it’s relaxed, fresh, less expensive and with less tension than in the other two cities.

However, Gdynia is a bit more pricey than other cities.

The most expensive aspect of living in Gdynia, like in most Polish cities, is accommodation, and if you want to rent an apartment while on a tight budget, you’ll have to look somewhere outside of the city.

One of the things Gdynia is known for are the great restaurants that the city offers. You can eat in posh restaurants if you have the means – no doubt about it, and if you want to have a decent meal in an inexpensive restaurant, you can eat for around 6$. Go to Hala Targowa, where you’ll find a local marketplace with fruits, fish, and even a fun flea market.

Network in Gdynia is efficient and frequent. Szybka Kolej Miejska is a fast regional commuter rail between Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia. It’s fast and cheap. Ticket price depends on distance, but if you need to move between the cities of Tricity, that’s your best option. A one-way ticket for public transport costs less than a dollar, while a monthly pass costs around 25$.

As far as utilities go in Gdynia, your bills won’t be exactly small, but the prices are not through the roof either. It mostly depends on the size of your apartment and how much electricity you spend. Basic utilities like electricity, water, gas and garbage services in an apartment of 85m2 will cost you around 170$. During winter, the bills might go up because of the heating.

Gdynia is full of leisure-friendly opportunities and is a good ground for social activities. There are obviously cinemas, theaters and similar facilities, but also a lot of sports grounds, places to exercise and hike. But if you’re more of an indoor person, a membership in a gym or a fitness club will cost you around 30$. When it comes leisure activities, a cinema ticket costs around 6$, depending on the seat and the day of the week.

There are two main shopping streets where you’ll certainly have a great time: Świętojańska and Starowiejska and then there are many of Gdynia’s malls. Klif, for example, is a high quality shopping mall where you can buy quality jeans for no less than 65$, and running sneakers of brands like Nike for over 70$.

Rent is the single most expensive aspect of living in Gdynia, though it varies significantly, depending on where you want to live. Apartments in big cities are wanted, so don’t be shocked to see a studio for around 400$ per month. If you want to save some money, look for an apartment outside of the city, and your rent will drop to around 350$.

People of Gdynia spend most money on food, which is expected in most cities.
