Cost of Living in Jakarta, Indonesia

RESTAURANTS

When it comes to going to a restaurant, each tourist can have a different experience.

Most average tourist restaurants offer meals for prices somewhere between $5 and $15.

Of course, if you go to more expensive ones, you can eat for about $50 per person with a few alcoholic drinks.

Local beer is relatively cheap, the domestic ones are about $2.29while imported ones can cost around $3.5, especially when bought in some hotels and restaurants.

MARKETS

Apart from supermarkets, which are mostly affordable, you can buy your food at markets, where you can get everything for very cheap prices (if you’re good at haggling, that is!)

However, markets in Jakarta can lack food from time to time, which means it tends to be somewhat more expensive than you would expect it to be.

Less supply means a higher price.

But, if you’re more of a tourist that likes to cook at home, this option is much more budget-friendly for you than eating at a restaurant.

TRANSPORTATION

Like in any country, you can get ripped off in Jakarta too if you get into the wrong taxi.

However, in normal circumstances, transportation in Jakarta isn’t expensive at all, with gasoline prices as low as 0.60$ per liter.

You can also buy a one-way ticket for public transport for less than 0.23$, while taxis start at a normal tariff is also less than 0.50$.

Even a monthly pass for public transportation is just 10$ which is more than affordable.

UTILITIES (MONTHLY)

The cost of basic utilities, including heating, water, cooling, and electricity in a normal-size (slightly larger) apartment in Jakarta (which means an 85m2 apartment) is rather expensive and goes up to twice as much as it would in, for example, Bali or Bandung.

However, high-speed internet is half the price in these cities, costing about 30$ per month.

SPORTS & LEISURE

Leisure and sports time! For those interested in splurging their money and wanting to indulge in sports or other types of recreation, such activities will cost more.

However, they are not as expensive as they can get in western countries, though it is more expensive than in other known Indonesian cities: a monthly fee for a fitness membership is about 30.73$.

Renting a tennis court is a bit more, but such is the situation in most countries, seeing that tennis is an expensive sport.

CLOTHING & SHOES

If you want to go shopping, you might want to hop to some other Indonesian city to do it!

With its high prices in touristy places and popular restaurants, it only makes sense that shopping for clothes can be a bit expensive.

For instance, you can buy a pair of quality jeans like Levi’s for nearly 42.73 $, a dress, or a plain shirt for about 30$, while branded sneakers are about 75$.

RENT PER MONTH

Renting an apartment in Jakarta is a little bit more expensive than renting it somewhere else in Indonesia, but this is expected – it’s the capital!

If you’re planning on renting a studio apartment alone or with a friend, expect it to cost more than 490.15 $ a month, while for larger families (that need larger housing facilities) it can cost up to three times as much.

However, it mostly depends on the type of neighborhood you want to rent in.
