Germany might not be the first destination that springs to your mind when you think of a beach vacation.
With its world-famous Christmas Markets and snow-covered castles, who could blame you?
However, this Western European country has much more to offer, as well as its beautiful beaches along the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
So, if you still do not believe it, here is a list of the top beaches in Germany.
Sassnitz
Situated on the Jasmund Peninsula on the Rügen Island, Sassnitz is a place worth visiting about an hour’s drive from mainland Germany.
As a result of tectonic plate shifting and erosion, Sassnitz has spectacular white chalk cliffs surrounding the beachside of Jasmund National Park.
Orchids, black alder and European crab apple are just a few of the flora found in this natural reserve.
The birdwatching is also fantastic.
The skies are frequented by peregrine falcons, white-tailed eagles and kingfishers.
With its untouched wildlife, temperate climate and lovely luxury resorts, it is not surprising at all that this area attracts visitors all year round.
Sylt
The “Queen of the North Sea,” officially known as Sylt, is located further north.
The island is a great location where you can enjoy plenty of outdoor activities in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park.
After a day in the park full of adventure or a day of water sports such as wind, kite or regular surfing on the beach, visit one of Sylt’s restaurants to satisfy your appetite with high-quality fresh foods.
Fortunately, Sylt’s natural beauty will be preserved for future generations, as roughly half of the island is protected as a nature reserve.
Warnemünde
Another Baltic Sea beach worth visiting, Warnemünde, welcomes visitors who like a long beachfront and a bustling marina.
Founded as a port at the beginning of the 13th century, the village has a long fishing history.
Warnemünde used to be entirely dependent on fishing, which was not only a source of food and income but also a big part of its culture.
This deep connection with the sea and fishing can be found in the local cuisines.
The local favourite that should not be missed is a breaded herring dish known as Fischbrötchen.
Föhr
A little island located off the coast of Dagebull in northern Germany, just south of Sylt.
Föhr is famous for the Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer National Park, which has untouched beaches and breathtakingly beautiful sunsets.
The island is an ideal destination for recreation with numerous water sports and activities available.
It is also known for its healing waters, which are used in thalassotherapy.
Because of its healing waters and winds, on the island exist many wellness retreats, popular throughout the whole year.
Langeoog
This charming island town, situated off the coast of Norden in northwestern Germany, is a great beach getaway.
Langeoog is a car-free island just ideal for families, with landmarks full of old pirate stories and long stretches of beach where you can walk in the sand for hours.
The island has a relaxed atmosphere, making it perfect for a lazy beach vacation or just a day spent relaxing by the sea.
The beaches in northern Germany will not disappoint you, whether you enjoy kitesurfing, swimming or simply sitting on the sand.
You can not go wrong with any of these fantastic destinations, no matter what time of year it is.
However, if you want to get a tan, the best time to visit is between July and August.
These are only a few of the beach destinations in Germany, so now when you find out about them what is stopping you to pack your bags and visit them?
