For many holiday lovers, no Halloween is complete without a creepy photoshoot.

Well, maybe you are in the other corner of the world and do not celebrate this holiday at all.

Never mind.

Then you have watched horror movies for sure.

To tell you the truth, life can give us much scarier stories than the screenwriters’ imagination can.

Below, you will read about eight horrible places on Earth to get adrenalin rush.

Also, they are more than good for taking creepy photos.

These are closed asylums or sanatoriums where the (psst… insane) doctors used to treat people with different mental disorders.

Some of the abandoned buildings look very bad, the others are simply horrible.

Ready for ghost hunting?

Off we go!

1. Magdalene Laundries

This Irish asylum for penitent women (single pregnant ones or those considered too promiscuous) is located in New Ross, County Wexford.

The laundries operated from the 18th to the late 20th centuries and were a bleak page in Irish history.

Roman Catholics run laundries to make money from rich people and businesses.

And to punish women for their sins.

At the door, nuns changed the names of women and asked them to keep silence.

So the women used to do laundry and scrub corridors all day long for years.

These “fallen women” were supposed to obtain a “very good education” here by working for a meal.

After the laundries were officially named “the nation’s shame” in 2013, the authorities announced a compensation package (financial, counseling, and medical services) for survivors.

2. Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

This historic landmark is located in West Virginia.

The other name of the building is the West State Hospital.

You can book a paranormal or historic tour here to see the traces of the Civil War, the gold robbery, and medical treatments.

The building is very massive.

The ghost hunts last here year-round.

You’ll get wonderful creepy pictures and get rather impressed.

3. Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital

Thousands of tourists came to South Korea in the hope to explore a high paranormal activity.

Gonjam was considered one of the most haunted asylums in the world.

It was a really good place for creepy stories and photos.

In fact, it was closed in the 1990s due to awful sanitation conditions and financial problems.

But the old furniture and personal belongings were left in the rooms.

We will never know what happened there because they demolished the building in 2018.

Hopefully, the ghosts have finally found eternal peace.

The Pennhurst Asylum in Pennsylvania offers daytime history and photography tours.

Also, you can have an overnight paranormal activity investigation on site.

The tour includes visiting the underground tunnels in Philadelphia, Rockwell, and Devon.

Too scared to go home?

You can stay in the hotel nearby.

For ghost hunt that starts at 9 PM, you can take your own equipment or rent some provided by Pennhurst.

5. Beechworth Lunatic Asylum

In the other corner of the world, Australia has some haunted places too.

Beechworth Lunatic Asylum or Mayday Hills Hospital held a total of 1200 patients.

Most of them stayed in the hospital forever.

According to the legend, tourists see faces in the windows of the building.

You can go and check it out too.

6. Waverly Hills

Louisville, Kentucky is famous for it’s Waverly Hills sanatorium.

One of the creepiest places in the entire world attracts thousands of tourists yearly.

The building is a beautiful sample of the 20th century Tudor Gothic Revival architecture style.

Worth shooting.

What can you expect?

Apart from trying to notice a ghost of a boy who plays with rubber bolls, you can come for a family-friendly Christmas Lazer Show.

Also, take one of the historic tours in the sanatorium or stay overnight.

Please remember that no trespassing is allowed here at any time.

Respect the ghosts.

7. Danvers State Hospital

Have you seen The Joker?

State Lunatic Hospital in Danvers once inspired a famous American writer H.P. Lovecraft to create horror stories that become the basis for Batman: Arkham Asylum and The Joker.

While Waverly Hills seems to be the most “friendly” haunted location on our list, Danvers Lunatic Asylum in Massachusetts does not.

That’s where the mad doctors used lobotomy and shock therapy for treatment.

Thanks to its beautiful Gothic architecture, the building is good for photoshoots.

8. Buffalo State Lunatic Asylum

This is a very nice 145-year old Gothic architecture building.

If you are eager to stay here for a while, book a room at the Hotel Henry.

It is open right here in the Richardson Olmsted Complex.

The asylum has been officially recognized as the site to save and the architectural treasure.

And it is not for ghost hunting according to advertisements.

But locals state the opposite.

The hotel still has a creepy story behind it, they say.

Ghosts of patients who died within the walls of the asylum are still walking the corridors.

Who knows.

Go for it and tell us what you have discovered.
